Public Parks

Beyond our historic downtown, Port Washington offers an escape into nature through a system of 32 designated city parks. Whether you seek panoramic blufftop views of Lake Michigan at Upper Lake Park, a family adventure at the nationally recognized inclusive Possibility Playground, or a peaceful stroll along the unique lakeside peninsula of Coal Dock Park, our green spaces are designed for recreation and relaxation. Discover miles of scenic walking trails, pristine beaches, and picturesque picnic spots just steps away from the harbor.

Beaches

Beaches stretch out north and south from the city, below dramatic bluffs. South Beach is famed for the flock of flamingos that landed there after being thrown off-course by a hurricane in 2023. Normally, it's locals and visitors alike who flock to South Beach for swimming, beach walks, kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding. To the north, North Beach is accessible by staircase from Upper Lake Park or a paved walkway from Veterans Park. Be sure to find "Mile Rock," a large boulder painted with a Led Zepplin motif.

Nature Preserves

Port Washington is lucky to have two nature preserves in city limits, Sauk Creek Nature Preserve and Birchwood Hills Nature Preserve. Each has its unique features and wildlife, making it easy to immerse yourself in nature without leaving the city. Just to the south of Port Washington is the popular Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve. This natural area features dramatic lake vistas and a staircase through the gorge to a hidden Lake Michigan beach area.

Harrington Beach State Park

Just 12 miles to the north of Port Washington sits Harrington Beach State Park. This park in Belgium, WI, features a quarry lake, mile-long Lake Michigan beachfront, shaded hiking trails, campground and astronomy observatory.
